Pressurized vs pressureless balls
Did you know there are two different types of tennis balls? This factor is important when asking how long do tennis balls last.
Pressurized balls are the most popular choice. These are what you’ll see most people playing with down at your local tennis courts!

Pressurized tennis balls contain gas and air pressure within a rubber core. This is what gives those fluffy yellow things their bounce and liveliness.
This makes them ideal for matchplay and hitting. There are drawbacks, though, when it comes to durability.
In fact, the moment you open the can, they start losing pressure quickly. Oh no! Don’t worry, you won’t notice this immediately, but they will lose their bounce over time.
What is the alternative, I hear you ask? Well, that is where pressureless balls take centre stage!
They are solid rubber without any internal gas pressure. They last a lot longer than their pressurized cousins. This means they retain their bounce far longer!
I know what you’re thinking! So why not just play with pressureless balls, then, Chris?
Well, there is a trade-off. Pressureless balls tend to feel heavier and less responsive. Basically, they don’t feel as ‘lively.’
The choice between the two often comes down to what you prefer and the frequency of use.
In addition there are even differences across the globe! In fact, in the United States, tennis balls tend to be less expensive and less durable because US players generally prefer to use new balls after a few sets [2].
What factors influence durability?
We know there are different types of balls and what they are made of. What influences how long tennis balls last? There are a number of different factors that play a crucial role in how long tennis balls last:
- Frequency of play – The more you use them, the quicker they wear down! If you play with the same balls frequently, they will lose their bounce quicker.

Clay courts [3] are slightly more forgiving for balls. You’ll often find that balls maintain their bounce longer than hard surfaces.
Hard courts are by far the most harsh on tennis balls. There is constant friction leading to faster degradation of the ball. The felt wears down faster, and the balls lose pressure quicker.
Grass courts are not as harsh on the tennis balls compared with other surfaces. Grass retains more moisture and is uneven, and this can often affect the ball’s durability, but not as much.
